AL JABRIYAH II

Today's SotD is the Suez-Max tanker Al Jabriyah II (IMO: 9329708, Port of Registry: Kuwait). The Al Jabriyah II is 333 metres long and 60 metres wide and has a maximum draught of 22.5 metres. These dimensions give the vessel a deadweight tonnage of 317,570. The vessel was delivered in 2007 by Hyundai Heavy Industries and is owned by the Kuwait Oil Tanker Co. She is propelled by a 6S90MC-C HHI MAN B&W engine. The Al Jabriyah II's sister vessel is the Kazimah III which featured as Ship of the Day in November 2007.

The Al Jabriyah II is scheduled to arrive later this afternoon at the MOT Terminal Rotterdam from Sidi Kerir Terminal.

YM UNITY

YM UnityToday we are reporting on the 300th ship to appear on this website. The honour goes to the 8,200 TEU containervessel YM Unity (IMO: 9302619, Port of Registry: Monrovia, Liberia). The YM Unity is 335 metres long, almost 43 metres wide and has a deadweight of 101,411 tonnes. She was built in 2006 at Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea and is propelled by a 68,666 KW HHI-MAN B&W 12K98MC Mk6 Engine. The vessel is operated by Yang Ming Line, China.

The YM Unity arrived this morning at the ECT Delta Terminal, Rotterdam with a last port of call at Singapore. She is scheduled to depart tomorrow afternoon with destination Hamburg, Germany.

JUPITER DIAMOND

Today's SotD is the Ro/Ro Car carrier Jupiter Diamond (IMO: 7718462, Port of Registry: Singapore). The Jupiter Diamond is capable of transporting a maximum of 5,430 cars (high car capacity: 2,481), is 214 metres long, almost 30 metres wide and has a depth of about 28 metres, with a maximum draught of only 8 metres. She was built in 1978 by Mitsubishi, Japan and is currently owned by the Nippon Yushen Kaisha Line (NYK Line) transporting cars of Japanese origin all around the world.

The Jupiter Diamond will arrive this afternoon at the Rotterdam Car Terminal from Antwerp, Belgium.

LOGOS II

Logos IIThe Logos II (IMO: 6806834, Port of Registry: Valletta, Malta) is a floating Christian bookshop visiting port cities all around the world. The main goals of the owners are:
- supplying vital literature resources
- encouraging inter-cultural understanding
- training young people for more effective life and service
- promoting greater global awareness
- providing practical aid and sharing a message of hope in God wherever there is opportunity

The MV Logos II is managed by Gute Bücher für Alle e.V (Good Books for All), from the offices in Mosbach, Germany, on behalf of the UK registered charity Educational Book Exhibits Ltd.

The vessel was originally named Antonio Lazaro. She was built by Union Naval Levante SA of Valencia Spain in 1968. Educational Book Exhibits Ltd. purchased the ship on 21 October 1988, and renamed her Logos II. Extensive renovations and upgrades were carried out to prepare the ship for future service. The vessel is 109 metres long, 16 metres wide and is propelled by two B&W 1035 VBF 62 in-line 10 cyl. engines with a capacity of 4592 kW (6240 bhp) total.

The Logos II will be replaced by the new acquired vessel 'Logos Hope', but since she is still under renovation, the decision was made to sent the Logos II to the Caribbean once more, although a new crew must be found for the journey.

The Logos II arrived last night at the 'Koningin Wilhelminahaven' at Vlaardingen, where work to make community life on board possible again will continue. Providing enough crew come forward for the long voyage across the Atlantic, the ship is scheduled to depart for Bermuda on 6th February.

PENELOP

Penelop
The Penelop (IMO: 9325908, Port of Registry: Nassau, Bahama's) is a crude oil tanker of 253 metres long, 44 metres wide and a draught of almost 15 metres. She has a gross tonnage of 63,448 and a deadweight tonnage of 114,500. The Penelop is managed by Lundqvist Rederierna, Finland and was built in 2006 by Daewoo Shipbuilding, Korea. The vessel is mainly deployed between the Baltic area and Rotterdam.

The Penelop is expected to arrive this evening at the Shell Europoort terminal, carrying a load of crude oil from Primorsk, Russia.

ELLY MAERSK

Elly Maersk
The Elly Maersk (IMO: 9321536, Port of Registry: Svendborg, Denmark) is, together with her sisters (amongst which are the 'Emma Maersk' and 'Evelyn Maersk'), the largest containership ever with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. Rumours are that a total capacity of 13,500 teu is also possible. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweight of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimise the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series will also establish new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was already the sixth in line of Maersk PS-class vessels. Currently there are eigth PS-class vessels of which the most recent is the 'Eugen Maersk'

The Elly Maersk is scheduled to arrive this afternoon at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from the port of Algeciras. The vessel will then set sail for Bremerhaven on the APM AE1 line. She will return within about 7 weeks to Rotterdam.

SCAPINO

Today's SotD is the tug Scapino (IMO: 9237577, Port of Registry: Naples, Italy). This ocean going supply vessel is capable of assisting/handling other vessels for operation at mid-sea, for carrying out berthing duties at jetties and is equipped for antipollution services. She is fitted for oil pollution control using skimmers, booms and oil chemical dispersants through spray booms. The vessel is 36.6 metres long, 11.2 metres wide, has a cargo deck of 147.8 m2 with a maximum load on deck of 290 mt. She has a maximum speed of about 14 knots, which is possible by the two 1620 KW Wartsila engines.

The Scapino arrived this morning at the Parkkade, Rotterdam.

DSND PELICAN

DSND Pelican
The DSND Pelican (IMO: 8420244, Port of Registry: Nassau, Bahama's) is a multi-purpose offshore support vessel offering a primary dive support capability. An 18 man twinbell saturation diving system rated
to 370 metres provides a flexible platform for subsea operations. The vessel is 94 metres long, 18 metres wideand has a cargo deck area of 670 m2. She is equipped with a helideck to support Super Puma helicopters and provides accomodation to 105 persons. The Pelican is propelled by four 3000 kW Wichmann engines together with two 2750 kW stern azimuth thrusters. The vessel is owned and operated by Subsea 7, Cayman Islands.

The DSND Pelican is expected to arrive later this afternoon at Damen Shipyards, Schiedam.

COSCO BEIJING

Cosco Beijing The Cosco Beijing (IMO: 9308508, Port of Registry: Piraeus) is one of the largest container vessels nowadays, together with her sisters: Cosco Hellas, Cosco Ningbo, Cosco Yantian and Cosco Guangzhou. Only the in 2006 and 2007 built Maersk PS-class vessels (amongst which are the Emma Maersk, Estelle Maersk and Eleonora Maersk) and three in 2006 for CSCL built containervessels are larger in gross tonnage. The vessel is 350 metres long, almost 43 metres wide, has a deadweight tonnage of 107,000 and a teu capacity of 9,450. The Cosco Beijing is currently sailing on the AE1-loop which connects Asia and Europe.

The Cosco Beijing is scheduled to arrive later this evening at the ECT Terminal, Rotterdam, with the last port of call at Singapore. The vessel will leave tomorrow for Felixstowe, Hamburg and Antwerp before returning to the Far East.

SC BALTIC

SC Baltic
The SC Baltic (IMO: 7393793, Port of Registry: Nørresundby, Denmark) is an in 1975 built pallet handling vessel with an overall length of 95 metres, a width of 15 metres and a maximum draught of 5.7 metres. The vessel can handle pallets using the two starboard sidedoors together with the four pallet elevators and six on board forklifts. She is also capable of transporting special, project cargo at her open deck. She has a total bale capacity of 6.544 m3 and is propelled by a 2,200 kW MAK engine, which delivers the vessel a service speed of 12 knots.
The SC Baltic is expected to arrive this afternoon at the Hollandia yard in Krimpen a/d IJssel.

The Evelyn Maersk is scheduled to arrive this afternoon at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from the port of Algeciras. The vessel will then set sail for Bremerhaven on the APM AE1 line. She will return within about 7 weeks to Rotterdam.

AUDACIA

AudaciaToday's SotD is the recently converted pipelayer Audacia (IMO: 9305130, Port of Registry: Panama). The length of the Audacia including the stinger is 335 metres. She is 32 metres wide, is suited for installation of pipelines up to a diameter of 60 inches including coating, and is intended for operation in all water depths. The Audacia provides accomodation to a crew of 240. She was converted by Keppel Verolme, Rotterdam from a bulkcarrier to a an advanced offshore vessel earlier this year. The vessel is owned by the Swiss-based Allseas Group S.A. which is one of the major offshore pipelay and subsea construction companies in the world.

The Audacia is scheduled to arrive later this evening at the Maasvlakte Offshore put.

WISTERIA ACE

The Wisteria Ace (IMO: 9355197, Port of Registry: George Town, Cayman Islands) is a pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), which was delivered in 2007 at Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd. This vessel was the second in a series of PCTCs launched during 2007. She is 200 metres long, 32 metres wide and has a draught of 9.7 metres. These dimensions give the vessel a standard passenger car capacity of 6,400. The Wisteria Ace is operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Japan and propelled by a 15,090 KW Kobe diesel engine.

The Wisteria Ace is scheduled to arrive later this evening at the Rotterdam Car Terminal

GUNVOR MAERSK

Although she's not as large as the new PS-series Maersk vessel (amongst which are the Emma Maersk and Eleonora Maersk) the Gunvor Maersk (IMO: 9302891, Port of Registry: Aalborg, Denmark) is still one of the larger containerships owned by Maersk with its length of 367 meters, width of 43 meters and teu capacity of up to 9000. The vessel was built in 2005 by Odense Steel Shipyard, Denmark.

The Gunvor Maersk is scheduled to arrive this afternoon at the APM terminal, Rotterdam coming in from Bremerhaven, Germany. After Rotterdam the vessel will set sail for Algeciras, Spain and from there she will sail towards the Far East. The vessel will return in Rotterdam within two months.

CGG ALIZÉ

CGG AlizéThe CGG Alizé (IMO: 9178159, Port of Registry: Port Aux Français) is a purpose-built seismic data acquisition vessel capable of towing up to 16 streamers with a total length of 100 km. This allows for acquisition of cost-effective large 3D exploration projects or high-density, high-resolution 4D projects. The vessel is 100 metres long, 29 metres wide and has a draught of 7.6 metres. She is propelled by two 4,200 kW Wartsila engines which gives the vessel a cruising speed of 14.5 knots. She is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and positioning system as well as SynTRAK seismic instrumentation. The CGG Alizé is owned by Geomar S.A.S., France and is operated by CGGVeritas, France.

The CGG Alizé has arrived at the Port of Rotterdam this morning and is currently berthed at Damen Shipyards

GRAND VENTURE

Grand Venture
Bulk carrier Grand Venture (IMO: 9346342, Port of Registry: Panama) is an in 2005 built, 300 metres long vessel with a gross tonnage of 104,725. She is 50 metres wide, has a maximum draught of 18 metres and is propelled by a 18,630 kW Mitsui diesel engine. The vessel was built at Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Japan, is currently owned by Asian Cruiser S.A., Panama and is managed by Mizuho Sangyo Co, Japan.

The Grand Venture is expected to arrive later this evening at the EMO terminal, Maasvlakte carrying a load of iron ore from Ponta da Madeira, Brasil.

Moller - Maersk Group. A total capacity of 13,500 teu is also possible when containers are not fully loaded. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. Maersk calculates the teu capacity with loaded containers. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweigth of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimise the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. FIGHTER

FighterToday we have the in 1977 built tug Fighter (IMO: 7512454, Port of Registry: Antwerpen) arriving. She will be towed by the tugs Union Emerald and Union Ruby. The Fighter will be handed over from the current Belgium owner URS ('Union de Remorquage et de Sauvetage') to the Dutch foudation 'Intorno Ensemble' and will be berthed at Schiedam where she will be converted into a floating podium for all kinds of arts. The Fighter was the first tug involved at the rescue operations at the in 1987 capsised Herald of Free Enterprise. The Fighter is 42 metres long and 11 metres wide and was built in 1977 by Rupelmonde Shipyard, Belgium.

NYK OCEANUS

NYK Oceanus
The NYK Oceanus (IMO: 9312975, Port of Registry: Panama) was built in 2007 at IHI corporation shipyard, Japan and is currently owned and operated by NYK Line. The vessel is 336 metres long, 46 metres wide and has a maximum TEU capacity of 9,120 of which 600 reefer containers. These dimensions give the vessel a gross tonnage of 98,799. She is propelled by a Sulzer 12RT-flex96C engine which delivers a power output of 68,200 kW. She has a maximum speed of 24.5 knots. Although not as large as the NYK vessels Vesta, Vega, Venus and Virgo, the NYK Oceanus is still one of the largest containervessels currently sailing.


The NYK Oceanus is scheduled to arrive later this afternoon from Hamburg on the EU3-loop. She will leave within 48 hours with destination China and will return to Rotterdam in about two months.

CMA CGM PARSIFAL

Today's SotD is the CMA CGM Parsifal (Flag: Liberia, IMO: 9318060). The ship is capable of transporting about 8,200 teu and has a capacity for 700 reefers. She is 335 meters long, 43 meters wide and has a deadweight tonnage of 100.800. The vessel was built in 2006 by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, Korea and is managed by E.R. Schiffahrtsgesellschafts MBH, Germany.

The Parsifal is scheduled to enter the port of Rotterdam later this evening with destination ECT Delta terminal. The ship is sailing on the Far East - North-Western Europe line.
