OVERVIEW 2011

First let us start off with wishing you all the best for 2012. May all your wishes come true and may you have a prosperous and healthy year. The end of 2011 is well in sight and this gives us a great opportunity to look back on the year that has passed. In 2011 we have changed the layout of the website quite a bit with more possibilities for interactivity and a better outline of the website. The first ship of 2011 was the CMA CGM Norma, back then still one of the largest vessels in CMA CGM's fleet, but only recently knocked from her lead position by the CMA CGM Christoph Colomb, which featured the new ship design with the superstructure midships. In the first months of 2011 we've covered a great number of ship from various shiptypes, such as the jack-up rig Noble Scott Marks, heavy load vessel Rolldock Sun and the schooner Eendracht which returned to Rotterdam on March 29 after six months travelling in the Caribbean.

In May we saw the start of the cruise season in Rotterdam. Throughout the summer Rotterdam has been visited by a several cruise ships such as the Emerald Princess, AidaBlu, Cunard's Queen Elizabeth and of course several visits of Holland America's Ryndam and Rotterdam.

August was the month in which we covered the most different ships and shiptypes, such as oil tanker Ovatella, crane vessel Rambiz and pipelayers Tog Mor and Solitaire.

September and October appeared to be quiet months with mainly containerships, bulk carriers and tankers to be Ship of the Day. This peace came to a sudden halt when we saw containervessels Pantonio and CMA CGM Alaska collide with each other at the Maas Entrance area after a blackout of the Pantonio. Subsequently, we've reached the highest number of visitors on one day at October 11, 12 and 13. This brings us to the statistics. The busiest month for Ship of the Day of 2011, calculated in number of visits was October, of course due to beformentioned collision. May was also a very good month of course affected by the opening of the cruise season. Most visited pages are the post in 2007 of the Eleonora Maersk, the 2008 post of the Eugen Maersk to which Wikipedia links and again the collision of the CMA CGM Alaska and Pantonio. We've seen 115,000 pageviews from 54,000 unique visitors of which the top 5 comes from the US, UK, Netherlands, Germany and Philippines (I see seamen are also interested!).

As you can see, it has been a great year for Ship of the Day. Although it is sometimes time-consuming, it is also a lot of fun. We wish to thank you for visiting this website and hope to see you back in 2012, hopefully with a good number of posts from us each month.

STELLANOVA

Stellanova
The Stellanova (IMO: 9085730, Port of Registry: Rotterdam) is a heavy load ship operated by Jumbo Shipping. She is, together with her sisters Jumbo Spirit and Fairload, the smallest vessel in Jumbo's fleet. The ship is almost 96 metres long, about 18 metres wide and has a gross tonnage of 4,962. She has one hold with a bale capacity of 7176 cubic metres, one crane with a capacity of 250 tons and 1 derrick with a 250 tons capacity (in combi 500 tons). The vessel was built in 1996 by the IJssel Vliet Combination, the Netherlands.

The Stellanova is scheduled to arrive later this evening at the Waalhaven, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Gabon, Africa.

MAERSK EDISON

The Maersk Edison (IMO: 9463011, Port of Registry: London) is Maersk's answer to the new breed of containervessels, introduced by MSC, with the superstructure midships. The Maersk Edison was the first of nine newbuildings in this class, amongst which are the Maersk Edinburgh, Maersk Edmonton and Maersk Eindhoven. The vessel is 366 meters long and 48 meters wide and has a deadweight of 141,000 tonnes. She has a maximum capacity of 13,092 teu. The vessels are deployed in Maersk's AE-7 and AE-8 loop where they will replace the VLCS ships. The vessels are crucial in Maersk's strategy to maintain and expand market share. Rumours are that Maersk is also considering 18,000 teu vessels to be built in the following years.

The Maersk Edison arrived last night at the APM Terminal, Rotterdam from Le Havre. She will return to Rotterdam next week on her second call to Rotterdam this loop.

THIALF

ThialfThe Thialf (IMO: 8757740, Port of Registry: Panama) is the largest deepwater construction vessel (DCV) in the fleet of owner Heerema Marine Contractors (also operating crane vessel Hermod), and is capable of a tandem lift of 14,200 t (15,600 short tons). The dual cranes provide for depth reach lowering capability as well as heavy lift capacity to set topsides. The cranes can reach a lifting height of 95 meters above workdeck. This multi-functional dynamic positioned DCV is tailored for the installation of foundations, moorings, SPARs, TLPs and integrated topsides, as well as pipelines and flowlines. The vessel has an overall length of 200 meters and is 89 meters wide. She provides accomodation to a crew of 736 and is equipped with a helicopter deck suitable for a Boeing Chinook 234. The Thialf has six 5,500 kW - 360 degrees azimuth thruster, provicding a total thrust of 400 tonnes. She has a transit speed of 7 knots accompanied by one tug.

The Thialf is expected to arrive later tonight at Keppel Verolme shipyard on the high tide, towed by the tug Taurus. She is currently located at deepwater anchorage.

CMA CGM CHRISTOPH COLOMB

CMA CGM Christophe ColombToday's Ship of the Day is the CMA CGM Christophe Colomb (IMO: 9453559, Port of Registry: Marseille, France). The Christophe Colomb is currently the largest vessel in CMA CGM's fleet with a maximum teu capacity of 13,344. The vessel is 365 meters long and 51 meters wide. She was built in 2009 by Daewoo Heavy Industries, Korea. The vessel's design is comparable to the recently built MSC vessels (such as: MSC Beatrice) with the superstructure located midships. One can argue about the looks of this vessel, however the design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded. The Christophe Colomb will have seven sisterships, amongst which are the CMA CGM Amerigo Vespucci and CMA CGM Corte Real which have also been recently delivered. She is deployed in CMA CGM's FAL-5 loop connecting China and Europe.

The CMA CGM Christophe Colomb is schedule to arrive later tonight at the APM Terminal, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Le Havre.

EVELYN MAERSK

The Evelyn Maersk (IMO: 9321512, Port of Registry: Copanhagen, Denmark) is, together with her sisters (amongst which are the 'Emma Maersk' and 'Eleonora Maersk'), the largest containership ever with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. Rumours are that a total capacity of 13,500 teu is also possible. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweight of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimise the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series will also establish new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was launched at Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd on March 3rd 2007.

The Evelyn Maersk is scheduled to arrive later tonight at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Suez Canal Terminal. The vessel will then set sail for Bremerhaven on the APM AE1 line. She will return within two weeks to Rotterdam for her second call this loop.

CMA CGM LEO

The CMA CGM Leo(IMO: 9399208, Port of Registry: Valletta, Malta) is one of the more recent additions to the fleet of CMA CGM. The vessel was built at Hyundai Heavy Industries and delivered in 2009. She has a maximum teu capacity of 11,400 TEU and 800 connections for reefers. The CMA CGM Leo is 363 meters long and 45 meters wide and has a deadweight tonnage of 130,000. According to CMA CGM the vessel uses 6% less fuel than comparable ships. The CMA CGM Leo is propelled by a MAN B&W main engine with an output of 72,240 kilowatts, making it possible for the ship to travel at a service speed approaching 25 knots. CMA CGM has deployed the vessel in her FAL1 loop between Asia and Europe.

The CMA CGM Leo will arrive this afternoon from Zeebrugge at the ECT Delta Terminal. She will depart within 24 hours.

The Maersk Eindhoven (IMO: 9456771, Port of Registry: Majuro, Marshall Islands) is Maersk's answer to the new breed of containervessels, introduced by MSC, with the superstructure midships. The Maersk Eindhoven was the third of nine newbuildings in this class, amongst which are the Maersk Edinburgh, Maersk Edmonton and Maersk Essen. The vessel is 366 meters long and 48 meters wide and has a deadweight of 142,000 tonnes. She has a maximum capacity of 13,092 teu and is propelled by a Hyundai-Wärtsilä 12RT-flex 96C engine delivering a maximum power of 68,640 kW. The vessels are deployed in Maersk's AE-7 and AE-8 loop where they will replace the VLCS ships. The vessels are crucial in Maersk's strategy to maintain and expand market share. Rumours are that Maersk is also considering 18,000 teu vessels to be built in the following years.

The Maersk Eindhoven is scheduled to arrive this afternoon at the APM Terminal, Rotterdam from Hamburg.

MORNING CALM

Morning CalmThe Morning Calm (IMO: 9285615, Port of Registry: Nassau, Bahamas) is a pure car and truck carrier with a length over all of almost 200 metres, a width of 33 metres and a maximum draught of 10 metres. She was built in 2004 by Stocznia Gdynia S.A., Poland and is managed by Stamco Ship Management Company Ltd., Greece. The vessel is a floating car parking of 12 decks and has a capacity of about 6,600 cars on 54,500 sq metres.

The Morning Calm is scheduled to arrive this evening at the Rotterdam Car Terminal from Le Havre.
