EBBA MAERSK

Ebba Maersk
The Ebba Maersk (IMO: 9321524, Port of Registry: Copenhagen, Denmark) is already the fifth in line of Maersk's PS-class. Together with her sisters (amongst which are the 'Emma Maersk' and 'Evelyn Maersk') she was the largest containership ever in dimensions with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. A total capacity of 13,500 teu is also possible when containers are not fully loaded. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. Maersk calculates the teu capacity with loaded containers. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweight of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimise the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series have also established new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was launched at Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd in May 2007. The new MSC vessels, amongst which is the MSC Danit are smaller in dimensions, but can transport more TEU than the PS-class vessels of Maersk, due to their smart design (which doesn't give the vessels the best looks).

The Ebba Maersk will arrive later tonight at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia. Tomorrow, the vessel will set sail for Bremerhaven on the APM AE1 line. She will return within about 2 weeks to Rotterdam on her return call this loop.

CMA CGM LAPEROUSE

CMA CGM LaperouseToday's Ship of the Day is the CMA CGM Laperouse(IMO: 9454412, Port of Registry: Marseille). The Laperouse is currently one of the largest vessels in CMA CGM's fleet with a maximum teu capacity of 13,344. The vessel is 365 meters long and 51 meters wide. She was built in 2009 by Daewoo Heavy Industries, Korea. The vessel's design is comparable to the recently built MSC vessels (such as: MSC Beatrice) with the superstructure located midships. One can argue about the looks of this vessel, however the design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded. The Laperouse has seven sisterships, amongst which are the CMA CGM Amerigo Vespucci and CMA CGM Corte Real which have also been recently delivered. She is deployed in CMA CGM's FAL1 loop connecting China and North-Western Europe.

The CMA CGM Laperouse will arrive this morning at the APM Terminal, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Le Havre.

VALE RIO DE JANEIRO

Today's SotD is world's largest ore carrier Vale Rio de Janeiro. She was delivered in September 2011 from builder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd, South Korea to her owners, Brazilian mining corporation Vale. The vessel is 362 meters long, 65 meters wide and has a maximum draught of 23 meters. These dimensions give the vessel a deadweight of 402,000 tons. The Vale Rio de Janeiro is propelled by a single MAN B&W 7S80ME-C8 two-stroke low-speed diesel engine directly coupled to a fixed-pitch propeller. The main engine, which has a maximum output of 29,260 kilowatts (39,240 hp) at 78 rpm, burns 96.7 tons of heavy fuel oil per day. However, due to the large size of the vessel the emissions per cargo ton-mile are very low, making the Vale Brasil in fact one of the most efficient long-distance dry bulk carriers in service, and for this reason the ship received the Clean Ship award of 2011 in the Norwegian shipping exhibition Nor-Shipping.Vale Rio de Janeiro

Vale has reported 35 % drop in emissions per ton of cargo in comparison to older ships. Her service speed is 15.4 knots (source: Wikipedia). The Vale Rio is the successor of the Berge Stahl as the largest ore carrier in the world. She is 20 meters longer and 1.5 meters wider, giving the vessel a deadweight that is 40,000 higher than the Berge Stahl.

The Vale Rio de Janeiro arrived last night at the EECV Terminal where she will stay for unloading her cargo of iron ore originating form Ponta da Madeira for about 4 days.
