MSC DANIT

MSC DanitToday's ship of the day is the recently delivered MSC Danit (IMO: 9404649, Port of Registry: Panama). This container vessel is 365 meters long and 51 meters wide. Due to her design with the superstructure midships, she is capable of transporting about 14,000 TEU, more than Maersk PS-class (amongst which is the Emma Maersk). One can argue about the looks of this vessel, however the design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded. The main engine of the container ship is a MAN B&W 12K98MC-C with full output power of 72,240 kW. This power is enough for the ship to reach maximum speed of 25 knots. The MSC Danit is operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company on their Far-East to Europe loop.

The MSC Danit arrived this morning at the ECT Delta terminal, Rotterdam from Felixstowe and will depart within 24 hours.

ELLY MAERSK

Elly Maersk
The Elly Maersk (IMO: 9321536, Port of Registry: Svendborg, Denmark) is, together with her sisters (amongst which are the 'Emma Maersk' and 'Evelyn Maersk'), the largest containership ever with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweight of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimise the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series will also establish new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was already the sixth in line of Maersk PS-class vessels. Currently there are eight PS-class vessels of which the most recent is the 'Eugen Maersk'. The new MSC vessels, amongst which is the MSC Danit are smaller in dimensions, but can transport more TEU than the PS-class vessels of Maersk, due to her smart design (which doesn't give her the best looks).

The Elly Maersk is scheduled to arrived later tonight at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from the port of Tanger Med. She will stay there for about 36 hours. The vessel will then set sail for Felixstowe on the APM AE1 line. She will return within about 7 weeks to Rotterdam.

COSCO BEIJING

Cosco Beijing The Cosco Beijing (IMO: 9308508, Port of Registry: Piraeus) is still one of the largest container vessels measuring in gross tonnage nowadays, together with her sisters: Cosco Hellas, Cosco Ningbo, Cosco Yantian and Cosco Guangzhou. However since the launch in 2006 and 2007 of Maersk PS-class vessels (amongst which are the Emma Maersk, Estelle Maersk and Eleonora Maersk) and Cosco's own 10,000 teu vessels Cosco Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and America and more recently MSC's 14,000 TEU vessels (amongst which is the MSC Danit)the Cosco Beijing's position on the list of largest containerships is declining.

The Beijing is 350 metres long, almost 43 metres wide, has a deadweight tonnage of 107,000 and a teu capacity of 9,450. She is currently sailing on the AE1-loop which connects Asia and Europe.

EUGEN MAERSK

Eugen MaerskThe Eugen Maersk (IMO: 9321550, Port of Registry: Randers, Denmark) is, together with her sisters (amongst others) 'Emma Maersk', 'Estelle Maersk', 'Evelyn Maersk' and 'Ebba Maersk', the largest containership ever with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. A total capacity of 13,500 teu is also possible when containers are not fully loaded. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. Maersk calculates the teu capacity with loaded containers. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweigth of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimize the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series will also establish new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was delivered by Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd in 2008 as the seventh and last ship in Maersk's PS-class. The new MSC vessels, amongst which is the MSC Danit are smaller in dimensions, but can transport more TEU than the PS-class vessels of Maersk, due to her smart design (which doesn't give her the best looks).

The Eugen Maersk will arrive later tonight at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Tanger Med, terminal. Tomorrow, the vessel will set sail for Felixstowe. She will return within two months to Rotterdam.

JORK RANGER / MINDORO (UPDATE)

Jork RangerToday we have an updated story on the collision between containership Jork Ranger and tanker Mindoro last Tuesday. Awaiting orders the Mindoro has been waiting at sea for a few days, but will enter the port of Rotterdam today. She will be berthed at the Calandkanaal, where here cargo of jetfuel will be discharged. Any arrangements on possible repairs are not yet known to us. The Jork Ranger is currently located at Damen Shipyard, Schiedam for repairs on her bow. Most probably the legal complications of the collision will ensure both vessels to be arrested for quite at while.Mindoro

JORK RANGER / MINDORO (COLLISION)

Jork RangerToday another special edition of the Ship of the Day. This morning containership Jork Ranger (IMO: 9322542, Port of Registry: Limassol, Cyprus), with destination Rotterdam, came into collision with the tanker Mindoro (IMO: 9389095, Port of Registry: Piraeus, Greece), with destination Scheveningen Anchorage. The Mindoro suffered a breach on her portside of 6 by 5 meters at the waterline. The ship is leaking her cargo of jet fuel. Since jet fuel vaporises very quickly there will most probably be no large pollution. There are no casualties on both vessels. Mindoro
Vessel Jork Ranger is able to continue to Rotterdam where she will most probably enter later this morning.
