MSC DANIELA

MSC Daniela
Today's ship of the day is the recently delivered MSC Daniela (IMO: 9399014, Port of Registry: Panama). This container vessel is 366 meters long and 51 meters wide. Due to her design with the superstructure midships, she is capable of transporting about 14,000 TEU, more than Maersk's PS-class (amongst which is the Emma Maersk). One can argue about the looks of this vessel, however the design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded. The main engine of the container ship is MAN B&W 12K98MC-C with full output power of 72,240 kW. This power is enough for the ship to reach maximum speed of 25 knots. The MSC Daniela is operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company on their Far-East to Europe loop.

The MSC Daniela will arrive later tonight at the ECT Delta terminal, Rotterdam from Felixstowe and will depart within 36 hours.

EDT PROTEA


The EDT Protea (IMO: 9019107, Port of Registry: Limassol, Cyprus) is a dynamically positioned diving support vessel, fully equipped to perform subsea construction activities, as well as to support inspection-, repair- and maintenance contracts for offshore and subsea structures. The vessel is fitted with a dedicated surface demand diving system and an inspection class ROV system. The systems set-up is optimized for working in the specific outhern North Sea conditions with high (bottom) currents and low visibility. The vessel is owned by Navibay shipping, and operated by EDT Offshore ltd. She is 91 metres long, 15 metres wide and has a gross tonnage of 3,746 and provides accomodation to a crew of 88 persons. She was built in 1991 by Flekkefjord Slip, Norway and converted to her current form in 2006 by Naval Shipyard, Poland.

The EDT Protea is scheduled to arrive this evening at the Waalhaven, Rotterdam.

ELLY MAERSK

The Elly Maersk (IMO: 9321536, Port of Registry: Svendborg, Denmark) is, together with her sisters (amongst which are the 'Emma Maersk' and 'Evelyn Maersk'), the largest containership ever with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweight of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimise the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series will also establish new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was already the sixth in line of Maersk PS-class vessels. Currently there are eight PS-class vessels of which the most recent is the 'Eugen Maersk'. The new MSC vessels, amongst which is the MSC Danit are smaller in dimensions, but can transport more TEU than the PS-class vessels of Maersk, due to her smart design (which doesn't give her the best looks).

The Elly Maersk is scheduled to arrived later this afternoon at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from the port of Algeciras. She will stay there for about 36 hours. The vessel will then set sail for Bremerhaven on the APM AE1 line. She will return within about 7 weeks to Rotterdam.

QUEEN VICTORIA

Queen Victoria (source: Wikipedia)Today we have a cruise vessel of the Cunard Line entering the Port of Rotterdam, namely the two year old Queen Victoria (IMO: 9320556, Port of Registry: Southampton). The Queen Victoria is 294 metres long, 36 metres wide, 54 metres high and has a gross tonnage of 90,049. She provides accomodation to a maximum of 2,000 guests in 990 staterooms which are located on 12 decks. Nice to mention is that 86% of the rooms are outside and 71% of the rooms have balconies. Of course, she is equipped with several lounges, bars and restaurants. Next to this, she is also equipped with a shopping mall, a winter garden, a grand, stylish West-End-style theatre, a conference center, fitness center, sports deck etc., etc. She was built in 2007 by Fincantieri Shipyards, Italy.


The Queen Victoria has entered the port of Rotterdam this morning and will berth at the Holland Amerikakade.

STENA ANTARCTICA

The Stena Antarctica (IMO: 9322827, Port of Registry: George Town, Cayman Islands) is quite unique since there are only a few ice class tankers with the dimensions this vessel has. The Stena Antarctica is 250 metres long, almost 44 metres wide and has a draught of almost 15 metres. These dimensions give the Aframax-dimensioned tanker a deadweight tonnage of 115,000. She was built in 2006 by Samsung Heavy Industries, Korea, is currently owned by Moon Shipping Servicos e Navegacao Lda and is on a 10 year long timecharter for Progetra, Russia.

The Stena Antarctica is scheduled to arrive later this evening at the Calandkanaal, Rotterdam from Kronshtadt, Russia.

BAR PROTECTOR

Bar ProtectorThe Bar Protector (IMO: 7814450, Port of Registry: Nassau, Bahama's) is a diving support vessel of 112 meters long, 20 meters wide and a maximum draught of 6.8 meters. She is propelled by a main engine of 4,500 kW and is equipped with two aft thrusters of 1,120 kW each and two bow thrusters of 1,120 kW each. The vessel has a free deck area of 800 sq.m. and has a main crane with a maximum capacity of 100 tonnes SWL. She can accomodate up to 109 people and is equipped with a diving system suitable for up to 12 divers working at various depths to a maximum of 300 m. The system comprises 4 decompression chambers, a 3 man 6.3 cu.m bell and an hyperbaric lifeboat. The vessel is owned and operated by Saipem S.p.A., Italy.

The Bar Protector is arrived this morning at the ERS quay, Schiedam for loading supplies. She will stay there for about 3 days.

AL SHEGAYA

Al ShegayaThe Al Shegaya is an Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC) built in 1998 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea. The vessel is 335 meters long, 58 meters wide and has a maximum draught of almost 23 meters. With a deadweight of 310,000 tons, the Al Shegaya is one of the largest crude carriers currently sailing. The ship is owned by the Kuwait Oil Tanker Company which is also the owner of the vessels: Al Tahreer, Al Awdah, Kazimah III, Al Salhia, Al Samidoon, Al Funtas and Al Shuhada.

The Al Shegaya arrived in Rotterdam this morning from Mina Al Ahmadi, Kuwait for discharging at the MOT terminal.

CMA CGM RIGOLETTO

The CMA CGM Rigoletto (IMO: 9299654, Port of Registry: Marseille) is an in 2006, by Hyundai Heavy Industries built, Post-Panamax container vessel, capable of transporting up to 9,400 teu. She is 349 metres long, almost 43 metres wide, has a maximum draught of about 15 metres and a deadweight tonnage of 107,000. The CMA CGM Rigoletto also provides passenger accomodation with five passenger cabins. On board, guests can book a single or double room and enjoy the ship’s amenities including a lounge, gymnasium, pool and library along with meals at the captain’s table. Travelers seeking an uncommon cruise adventure between Asia and Europe need look no further. The CMA CGM Rigoletto is the fifth of eight super mega container vessels deployed in the new European (FAL2) service jointly operated by CMA CGM and China Shipping. Her sisters are: CMA CGM Fidelio, Medea and Norma.

ALEXANDER CARL

The Alexander Carl (IMO: 9039169, Port of Registry: Pusan, Korea) is an in 1993 built bulk carrier owned by Keoyang Shipping Co., Korea and managed by Hanjin Ship Management. The vessel is 311 metres long, 50 metres wide, has a maximum draught of 18 metres and a deadweight tonnage of 208,000. She was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding, Korea. The Alexander Carl is deployed in worldwide triangular services for the transportation of iron ore and coal under long-term contracts with POSCO, the world's largest steel mill and Australian mining companies.

The Alexander Carl arrived this morning at the EECV terminal, Rotterdam with a load of iron ore from Port Walcott, Australia.

NYK OCEANUS

The NYK Oceanus (IMO: 9312975, Port of Registry: Panama) was built in 2007 at IHI corporation shipyard, Japan and is currently owned and operated by NYK Line. The vessel is 336 metres long, 46 metres wide and has a maximum TEU capacity of 9,120 of which 600 reefer containers. These dimensions give the vessel a gross tonnage of 98,799. She is propelled by a Sulzer 12RT-flex96C engine which delivers a power output of 68,200 kW. She has a maximum speed of 24.5 knots. Although not as large as the NYK vessels Vesta, Vega, Venus and Virgo, the NYK Oceanus is still one of the largest containervessels currently sailing.


The NYK Oceanus will arrive later tonight from Hamburg on the EU3-loop. She will leave within 48 hours with destination China and will return to Rotterdam in about two months.

MINERVA ELLIE

Minerva EllieThe Minerva Ellie (IMO: 9297321, Port of Registry: Piraeus, Greece) is a 244 metres long, 42 metres wide crude oil tanker with a deadweight tonnage of 103,500 built in 2005 by Samsung Shipyard, Korea. She is capable of transporting 113,316 m3 of crude oil in three segregations. The ship's pumps have a capacity of 2,800 m3/hr each. The Minerva Ellie is a frequently seen vessel in the port of Rotterdam, operated by Minerva Marine Inc., Greece. She is propelled by a 14,511 kW HSD Engine.

The Minerva Ellie is scheduled to arrive this evening at the MOT Terminal, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Hound Point, UK.

CMA CGM DON CARLOS

CMA CGM Don Carlos

The CMA CGM Don Carlos (IMO: 9305491, flag: Liberia) is a 8,204 teu capable vessel, delivered in June 2007 by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. Her sister ship is the CMA CGM Parsifal which was SotD earlier this year. The ship is 334 meters long, almost 43 meters wide and has a deadweight tonnage of 100,800. She is currently sailing on CMA-CGM's French Asia Line 3 (FAL3) which services a line between China and Europe.

The CMA CGM Don Carlos will arrive in Rotterdam this afternoon from Hamburg and will depart within 36 hours for Zeebrugge. Afterwards the vessel will visit Le Havre, Malta and will then set sail to China via Khor Al Fakkan (AE). The ship will visit Rotterdam again within two months.

MIGHTY SERVANT I

Mighty Servant IToday's Ship of the Day is the semi-submersible heavy load vessel Mighty Servant I (IMO: 8130875, Port of Registry: Willemstad, Dutch Antilles). The Mighty Servant I is 190 metres long, 50 metres wide and has a maximum draught when submerged of 26 metres. The vessel has a deck space of 50 x 150 metres on which she is able to carry the heaviest semi-submersible drilling units, harsh environment deepwater jack-up rigs and large floating production platforms like TLPs, FPUs and Spars with drafts up to 14 metres. The Mighty Servant I is powered by two 6,770 kW Wärtsilä 12V38A diesel generator sets, driving two propellers by four E-motors of 3,100 Kw each which give the vessel a maximum speed of 15 knots. The vessel has a maximum sailing range of 59 days and is operated by Dockwise Shipping, Breda, The Netherlands.

The Mighty Servant I will arrive this morning at the Holland Amerikakade, Rotterdam.

EVA N

Today's SotD is the Eva N (IMO: 9127150, Ex. Name: Berge Nord, Port of Registry: Monrovia, Liberia) . She is currently owned by Neu Seeschiffahrt, Germany. The Eva N has a deadweight tonnage of 218,000, a draught of almost 19 meters and has seven holds and hatches. The ship was built in 1997 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea. This 305 meters long, 53 meters wide bulk carrier is the biggest ship to enter the Arctic sea. Other vessels owned by Neu Seeschiffahrt and visiting Rotterdam regularly are: Faith N, Alfred N and Waterman N.

The Eva N arrived last night at the EECV bulk terminal, Rotterdam from Seven Islands, Canada carrying iron ore.

The Emma Maersk will arrive this evening at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Algeciras where she will stay for about 36 hours. The vessel will then set sail for Bremerhaven on the APM AE1 line. She will return within about two months to Rotterdam.

NYK VESTA

NYK VestaToday we have the NYK Vesta (IMO: 9312808, Port of Registry: Panama) featuring as the Ship of the Day. The NYK Vesta is 338 meters long, almost 46 metres wide, has a gross tonnage of 97,825 tons and a TEU capacity of 8,600. She is propelled by a B&W 12K98ME engine which delivers approximately 87,000 horsepower. The vessel was built in 2007 by Hyundai Heavy industries and is equipped with the most advanced environmental safety measures, including an electronically controlled engine and a specialized hull structure to prevent fuel-oil leakage. The NYK Vesta was the third ship of four identical NYK vessels which were delivered between October 2006 and April 2007. Her sister vessels are: NYK Vega, NYK Venus and NYK Virgo

The NYK Vesta will later this evening at the ECT Delta Terminal coming from Hamburg.
