BERGE STAHL

Today's SOTD is the Berge Stahl (IMO:8420804, Port of registry: Stavanger, Norway) which is the largest ore carrier currently sailing with her deadweight of 364,767 tons. The vessel is owned by Bergesen Worldwide Shipping and was built in 1992 by Hyundai Heavy Ind. Co. Ltd. Ulsan, Korea. She is 343 meters long, 65 meters wide, has a draught of 23 meters and has 7 holds and hatches. She transports iron ore from the 'Companhia Vale do Rio Doce' mines in the eastern part of the Amazone, Brasil to Rotterdam about 9 or 10 times a year. From Rotterdam the iron ore is transported in barges to the steel mills of ThyssenKrupp and Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann in Germany. The Berge Stahl is scheduled to arrive later tonight at the EECV terminal, Rotterdam from Ponta da Madeira, Brasil.

EBBA MAERSK

The Ebba Maersk (IMO: 9321524, Port of Registry: Copenhagen, Denmark) is already the fifth in line of Maersk's PS-class. Together with her sisters (amongst which are the 'Emma Maersk' and 'Evelyn Maersk') she is the largest containership ever with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. A total capacity of 13,500 teu is also possible when containers are not fully loaded. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. Maersk calculates the teu capacity with loaded containers. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweight of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimise the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series have also established new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was launched at Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd in May 2007.

The Ebba Maersk will arrive this morning at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Tanger Med. Tomorrow, the vessel will set sail for Bremerhaven on the APM AE1 line. She will return within about 7 weeks to Rotterdam.

SHERAKHAN

The Sherakhan (IMO: 6618823, Port of Registry: Rotterdam) is a 69 meters long yacht built in 1965 as the trainingship Prinses Margriet for the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz by Vuyk & Zonen, Capelle a/d IJssel, The Netherlands. Since the ship didn't meet the demands for trainingpurposes anymore she was sold and subsequently converted into a luxury yacht by Verkerk Yachting Projects, The Netherlands in 2005. The cabins feature a master bedroom with bathroom, shower room, jacuzzi and 11 cabins for additional guests (upto 26 guests). The vessel is available for chartering and comes with a crew of 19. ITAL CONTESSA

The Ital Contessa (IMO: 9293806, Port of Registry: Majuro, Marshall Islands) was built in 2006 at Samsung Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries. The containership has a teu capacity of 8,000, is 334 meters long, almost 43 meters wide, has a draught of 14.5 meters and a deadweight tonnage of 101,000.
She is currently owned by Conti Reederei, Germany, managed by NSB Niederelbe, Germany and is sailing for the Italian based Italia Marittima (previously: Lloyd Triestino) on their China-Europe-Mediterranean Service.

The Ital Contessa is scheduled to enter the port of Rotterdam this afternoon and will take berth at the ECT Delta Terminal. The vessel's next destination is Hong Kong where she is due to arrive October 13. She will return in Rotterdam within two months.

MSC BEATRICE

Today's ship of the day is the recently delivered MSC Beatrice (IMO: 9399014, Port of Registry: Panama). This container vessel is 366 meters long and 51 meters wide. Due to her design with the superstructure midships, she is capable of transporting about 14,000 TEU, more than Maersk's PS-class (amongst which is the Emma Maersk). One can argue about the looks of this vessel, however the design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded. The main engine of the container ship is MAN B&W 12K98MC-C with full output power of 72,240 kW. This power is enough for the ship to reach maximum speed of 25 knots. The MSC Beatrice is operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company on their Far-East to Europe loop.


The MSC Beatrice will arrive later this afternoon at the ECT Delta terminal, Rotterdam from Felixstowe and will depart tomorrow.

NYK VESTA

Today we have the NYK Vesta (IMO: 9312808, Port of Registry: Panama) featuring as the Ship of the Day. The NYK Vesta is 338 meters long, almost 46 metres wide, has a gross tonnage of 97,825 tons and a TEU capacity of 8,600. She is propelled by a B&W 12K98ME engine which delivers approximately 87,000 horsepower. The vessel was built in 2007 by Hyundai Heavy industries and is equipped with the most advanced environmental safety measures, including an electronically controlled engine and a specialized hull structure to prevent fuel-oil leakage. The NYK Vesta was the third ship of four identical NYK vessels which were delivered between October 2006 and April 2007. Her sister vessels are: NYK Vega, NYK Venus and NYK Virgo

The NYK Vesta is expected to arrive this afternoon at the ECT Delta terminal from Jeddah.

STAD AMSTERDAM

The Stad Amsterdam (IMO: 9185554, Port of Registry: Amsterdam) is a clipper in historical style built between 1997 and 2000 at the initiative of Randstad and the municipality of Amsterdam. The ship has 14 luxury cabins, a spacious dining room (for dinners and presentations) and an open-air bar. The Stad Amsterdam can be privately booked for business events, luxury cruises and adventurous sailing trips. The steel-hulled vessel is 78 meters long, 10 meters wide, has a sail surface of 2,200 m2 and can also be propelled by her 749 KW engine.

The Stad Amsterdam arrived this morning at the Holland Amerikakade from IJmuiden. The vessel should have sailed to Oostende with a visit to the UK, but due to bad weather, she will visit Rotterdam now.

CMA CGM HYDRA

The CMA-CGM Hydra (IMO: 9356309, Port of Registry: London) is a 347 meters long, 45 meters wide containership with a maximum teu capacity of 10,960 and is equipped with 700 reefer points. The vessel is propelled by a Man B&W 12K98ME-C engine which gives the ship a maximum speed of 26 knots. She was delivered in april 2009 at Daewoo Heavy Industries, Korea. She is deployed on CMA CGM's FAL1 loop between the Far East and Western Europe. The ship also has capacity for 8 passengers for cargo ship cruising. The CMA CGM Hydra will arrive later tonight at the ECT Delta Terminal with the last port of call at Hamburg.

MSC DANIELA

ESTELLE MAERSK

The Estelle Maersk arrived this morning at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Tanger Med. Within 36 hours, the vessel will set sail for Felixstowe on the APM AE-7 loop. She will return within about 7 weeks to Rotterdam.

EVA N

Today's SotD is the Eva N (IMO: 9127150, Ex. Name: Berge Nord, Port of Registry: Monrovia, Liberia) . She is currently owned by Neu Seeschiffahrt, Germany. The Eva N has a deadweight tonnage of 218,000, a draught of almost 19 meters and has seven holds and hatches. The ship was built in 1997 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea. This 305 meters long, 53 meters wide bulk carrier is the biggest ship to enter the Arctic sea. Other vessels owned by Neu Seeschiffahrt and visiting Rotterdam regularly are: Faith N, Alfred N and Waterman N.

The Eva N will arrived last night at the EECV bulk terminal, Rotterdam from Seven Islands, Canada carrying iron ore.

EISVOGEL

The Eisvogel (IMO: 8736198, Port of Registry: Trieste) is a an in 1961 built icebreaker of 35 meters long, almost 10 meters wide. She was built for the German navy by Hitzler Werft, Germany and is propelled by two Maybach MD 655 engines delivering a total output of 1765 kW at 1400 rpm which gives the vessel a 20 tons bollard pull and a maximum speed of 14 knots. Nowadays the vessel is operated as a standard tug by Lucatelli Towing & Salvage, Trieste, Italy. The Eisvogel is expected to arrive later tonight at the Verolme yard at IJsselmonde, Rotterdam.

FJORD

Today we have the recently converted vessel Fjord (IMO: 8636740, Port of Registry: Rotterdam) featuring as the Ship of the Day. The Fjord is a 159 metres long, 45.5 metres wide semi-submersible heavy transport vessel equipped with a ballast system with a total capacity of 7000m3 /hr. The ballast system is remotely controlled from a control room. The vessel is equipped with two independent remote sounding systems with interactive loading computers. The Fjord provides accomodation to a total crew of 33 persons. She is propelled by a Wärtsilä Vasa 8L32 providing a power of 3 x 3,840 kW. The Fjord has a free deck space of 132 by 45.5 metres and a deckload of 25 t/m2. She can be submerged to a maximum of 11 meters above deck.

The Fjord will arrive this morning at the Waalhaven, Rotterdam. The Fjord just finished a job delivering a module for a platform in the Halfdan Oilfield, west of Denmark.
