MSC NIKITA & NIRINT PRIDE (COLLISION OFF ROTTERDAM)

Today's SotD post regards a special occasion near the Port of Rotterdam. Last night the vessels MSC Nikita (IMO: 7820942, Port of Registry: Panama), bound for Antwerp and Nirint Pride (IMO: 9214575, Port of Registry: Douglas, Isle of Man) collided into each other at the intersection point of the shipping lane outward from Rotterdam and the shipping lane for southbound traffic, also called the 'roundabout'. The MSC Nikita suffered heavy damage near the engine room where a large breach in the hull was found. On the Nirint Pride a fire broke out. After extinquishing the fire, the Nirint Pride was able to return to the port of Rotterdam on her own power where she is currently located at Moerdijk. On crew member of the Nirint Pride had to be taken to a hospital with breathing problems. On board the MSC Nikita were no casualties. All crewmembers have been evacuated from the ship and she has been towed to a safe area where the vessel will not cause problems for vessel traffic. At the collision three containers were lost in sea.

ARTHUR MAERSK

Today's SOTD is the Arthur Maersk (IMO:9260445, Port of Registry: Ronne, Denmark). This 'Series S' container vessel was built in 2003 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea and can carry a total number of containers of 9,000. The ship is 352 meters long, 43 meters wide, has a deadweight tonnage of 109,000 and is currently sailing on the Maersk AE-1 loop.

The Arthur Maersk arrived this morning at the the APM Terminal, Rotterdam with a last port of call at Hamburg.

COSCO HELLAS

The Cosco Hellas(IMO: 9308510, Port of Registry: Piraeus) is one of the larger container vessels nowadays, together with her sisters: Cosco Beijing, Cosco Ningbo, Cosco Yantian and Cosco Guangzhou. The vessel is 350 metres long, almost 43 metres wide, has a deadweight tonnage of 107,000 and a teu capacity of 9,450. The Cosco Hellas is currently sailing on the AEN-loop which connects Asia and Europe.

The Cosco Hellas arrived this morning at the Euromax Terminal, Rotterdam, with the last port of call at Singapore.

BW FJORD

The BW Fjord (IMO: 8314471, Port of Registry: Panama) is an ore carrier built in 1987 by Ishikawajima do Brazil Estaleiros, Brasil as the Docefjord. She was renamed in 2000 to Berge Fjord and is named BW Fjord since 2007. The vessel is 332 metres long, 57 metres wide, has a maximum draught of over 23 metres and is currently operated by BW Gas, Norway. These dimensions give the vessel a deadweight tonnage of over 310,000.

The BW Fjord will arrive this afternoon at the EMO terminal Rotterdam carrying a load of iron ore from Tubarao, Brasil.

GIANT 3

The Giant 3 (IMO: 7706029, Port of Registry: Rotterdam) is a 140 meters long, 36 meters wide semisubmersible ocean-going transportation barge owned by Smit Transport and Heavy Lift, Rotterdam. She has a deck area of 4,320 sq.m., has a maximum deck load of 15 tonnes per sq.m. and a maximum summer deadweight of 24,000 tonnes. The vessel is equipped with a Detroit Diesel, type 4-71, 4 cylinders, water-cooled diesel engine, rated at 130 bhp when running at 1800 rpm. She was built in 1970 at Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, Japan.

The Giant 3 entered the port of Rotterdam this morning in tow by the tug Multratug 17, owned by International Transport Contractors.

HOEGH OSLO

Today we have the Hoegh Oslo (IMO: 9382396, Port of Registry: Oslo) featuring as the Ship of the Day. The Hoegh Oslo is a vehicle carrier capable of transporting 5,200 cars. This 180 metres long, 32 metres wide vessel was built in 2007 by Tsuneishi Cebu Shipbuilding Japan, is owned by Leif Hoegh & Co., Norway and managed by Hoegh Fleet Services, Norway. She has a gross tonnage of 52,400 and a deadweight tonnage of 16,650 with a maximum draught of 9.6 metres.

The Hoegh Oslo arrived this morning at the Rotterdam Car Terminal with the last port of call at Barcelona.

DENA

Today's Ship of the Day is the Very Large Crude Carrier Dena(IMO: 9218480, Port of registry: Valletta, Malta). The Dena is 333 metres long, 58 metres wide and has a draught of over 22 metres. These dimensions give the vessel a deadweight tonnage of almost 300,000. The vessel was built in 2004 by Dalian New Shipbuilding Heavy Industry and is powered by a seven-cylinder Sulzer 7RTA84T-B low-speed marine diesel engine with an output 27,160kW at 74rpm. This is linked to three sets of heavy fuel oil Wartsila 9L20C units with an output of 1,490kW at 900rpm. The engine gives the vessel a service speed of 16 knots with 15% sea margin. Fuel consumption is about 97mt per day. There is also a 1,765kVA alternator for Gulf weather conditions as well as an emergency generator with an output of 399kW at 1,800rpm/ She is manufactured as a complete double skin double bottom unit with a bulbous bow and transom stern with an open water frame. It has two longitudinal bulkheads in the cargo area. The cargo tanks and engine room of the vessel are protected by ballast tanks. She is owned by the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC). The Dena's sister are the Damavand, Darab, Daylam and Delvar.

The Dena arrived last night at the Euro Tank Terminal, Rotterdam for loading fuel oil. The Dena was already in port Rotterdam a week ago for discharging crude oil. As seen often lately, these large tankers will load fuel oil when fully discharged as profit possibilities in the fuel oil market are high at the moment. Another NITC vessel, the Hengam will do the same. After discharging her load of crude oil bit by bit in the last month, the vessel will now enter the port of Rotterdam this afternoon for loading fuel oil at the ship-to-ship bolders in the Calandkanaal.

HAWK

Today's Ship of the Day is the heavy lift, semi-submersible vessel Hawk (IMO: 8616556, Port of registry: Oslo, Norway). The Hawk was built in 1988 by Brodogradiliste Brodosplit Shipbuilding, former Yugoslavia as the tanker Jahre Transporter. She was converted into her current form in 2008. The vessel is 225 meters long, 45 meters wide, has a maximum operating draught of 10 meters and 23 meters when fully submerged. She has a free deck length of 157 meters and a free deck area of 6900 m2. The Hawk arrived this morning at the Calandkanaal, Rotterdam carrying the rig Noble Scott Marks on board.

WATERMAN N

The Waterman N (IMO: 8404147, port of registry: Panama) is a bulk carrier with a deadweight tonnage of almost 260,000 tons and a maximum draught of almost 20 meters. The vessel is 328 meters long, 54 meters wide and was built in 1985 as the Hyundai Giant at Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea. She is operated by Neu Seeschiffahrt Gmbh, Germany. The ship has 9 holds and the same number of hatches for the bulk transport of iron ore and coal and is propelled by a Man B&W 5L70MCE Diesel Engine.

The Waterman N will arrive later this evening at the EECV Terminal Rotterdam carrying a load of iron ore from Saldanha Bay.

MSC DANIELA

Today's ship of the day is the recently delivered MSC Daniela (IMO: 9399014, Port of Registry: Panama). This container vessel is 366 meters long and 51 meters wide. Due to her design with the superstructure midships, she is capable of transporting about 14,000 TEU, more than Maersk's PS-class (amongst which is the Emma Maersk). One can argue about the looks of this vessel, however the design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded. The main engine of the container ship is MAN B&W 12K98MC-C with full output power of 72,240 kW. This power is enough for the ship to reach maximum speed of 25 knots. The MSC Daniela is operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company on their Far-East to Europe loop.

The MSC Daniela will arrive this morning at the ECT Delta terminal, Rotterdam from Felixstowe and will depart tomorrow.

HENGAM

The Hengam (IMO: 9212905, Port of Registry: Valletta, Malta, ex.name: Iran Hengam) is a VLCC of 333 metres long and 58 metres wide. She has a maximum draught of 22 metres, a deadweight tonnage of almost 300,000 and was built in 2003 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea. She is currently owned and operated by the National Iranian Tanker Company, Teheran, Iran.

The Hengam is expected to arrive later this afternoon at the MOT terminal, Rotterdam. The Hengam was already in port Rotterdam two times in the last month for discharging crude oil and was anchored off Rotterdam for the period between the arrivals. It looks likt the Hengam will now discharge the last crude oil still on board the vessel.

MAASDAM

The Maasdam (IMO: 8919257, Port of registry: Rotterdam) is one of the most luxurious vessels in the Holland America Line fleet. She is one of the smaller vessels in the line with her length of almost 220 meters, a width of 31 meters and a capacity of 1.258 passengers. She is already the fifth ship of the HAL to bear the name.
The vessel has 629 rooms of which there is 1 penthouse suites, 28 deluxe suites, 120 normal suites, 336 outside staterooms and 144 inside staterooms. Furthermore there are several restaurants, bars, a theather, a kids club, special areas designed exclusively for teens, a casino and a health spa on board. She was built in 1993 in Italy by Fincatieri Shipyard.

The Maasdam has arrived this morning at the Holland Amerikakade. She will depart this evening with destination Waterford, Ireland and will continue her tour to the Liverpool, Greenock, Iceland, Greenland and Canada with a final destination at Boston, USA. Prices start from about $ 1.500 per person.

BAR PROTECTOR

The Bar Protector (IMO: 7814450, Port of Registry: Nassau, Bahama's) is a diving support vessel of 112 meters long, 20 meters wide and a maximum draught of 6.8 meters. She is propelled by a main engine of 4,500 kW and is equipped with two aft thrusters of 1,120 kW each and two bow thrusters of 1,120 kW each. The vessel has a free deck area of 800 sq.m. and has a main crane with a maximum capacity of 100 tonnes SWL. She can accomodate up to 109 people and is equipped with a diving system suitable for up to 12 divers working at various depths to a maximum of 300 m. The system comprises 4 decompression chambers, a 3 man 6.3 cu.m bell and an hyperbaric lifeboat. The vessel is owned and operated by Saipem S.p.A., Italy.

The Bar Protector is expected to arrive this afternoon at the ERS quay, Schiedam for loading supplies. She will stay there for about 24 hours.

COSCO INDIAN OCEAN

The Cosco Indian Ocean(IMO: 9355563, Port of Registry: Hong Kong) is one of Cosco's most recent newbuildings. This 10,000 teu container ship was launched in July 2008 at Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co.Ltd, China. The ship is 348 meters long, 45.6 meters wide and has a deadweight tonnage of 111,414. The vessel's Hyundai Heavy 12K98MC MK6 engine delivers a maximum power of 68,640 kW, which assure a maximum speed of about 24 knots.

The Cosco Indian Ocean arrived this morning at the Euromax Terminal with the last port of call at Singapore. She will depart within 36 hours with destination Felixstowe on Cosco's AEN service.

NYK OCEANUS

The NYK Oceanus (IMO: 9312975, Port of Registry: Panama) was built in 2007 at IHI corporation shipyard, Japan and is currently owned and operated by NYK Line. The vessel is 336 metres long, 46 metres wide and has a maximum TEU capacity of 9,120 of which 600 reefer containers. These dimensions give the vessel a gross tonnage of 98,799. She is propelled by a Sulzer 12RT-flex96C engine which delivers a power output of 68,200 kW. She has a maximum speed of 24.5 knots. Although not as large as the NYK vessels Vesta, Vega, Venus and Virgo, the NYK Oceanus is still one of the largest containervessels currently sailing.

The NYK Oceanus will arrive later this evening from Hamburg on the EU3-loop. She will leave within 48 hours with destination China and will return to Rotterdam in about two months.

CMA CGM TOSCA

Today's SotD is the CMA CGM Tosca (Port of Registry: Marseille, France, IMO: 9299783). The ship is capable of transporting about 8,500 teu and has a capacity for 700 reefers. She is 334 meters long, 43 meters wide and has a deadweight tonnage of 101,800. The vessel was built in 2005 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea and is managed and operated by CMA CGM, France. She is propelled by a 68,640 kW 12 cylinder MAN-B&W engine which gives the vessel a maximum speed of 23 knots. The Tosca's sisters are, amongst others, CMA CGM Parsifal, CMA CGM Don Carlos, CMA CGM Nabucco and CMA CGM La Traviata, all named after famous opera's. The CMA CGM Tosca arrived this at the ECT Delta terminal, Rotterdam. She is scheduled to depart the port of Rotterdam tomorrow. The ship is sailing on the French Asia Line (FAL) between the Far East and North-Western Europe.
