JAZAN

The Jazan (IMO: 9349540, Port of Registry: Dammam, Saudi Arabia) is a 306 meters long, 40 meters wide containership with a maximum capacity of 6,919 TEU and a maximum operating speed of 25.5 knots. The vessel is owned and operated by United Arab Shipping Company and operates on its Asia-Europe Container Service (AEC1). The Jazan was built at Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea and delivered at a naming ceremony held at Ulsan in Korea on Friday, 25th July, 2008. The vessel is the sixth A7 ship built by Hyundai Heavy industries Limited for UASC against an order for eight ships. Jazan is the name of one of the 13 provinces in the south west of Saudi Arabia, which is famous for producing tropical fruits and fishing. Jazan is also the name of the capital city of that province and is a major seaport on the Red Sea.

The Jazan is expected to arrive this evening at the ECT Delta Terminal, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Cagliari, Italy. The ship will depart within 36 hours with destination Thamesport.

MSC DANIELA

Today's ship of the day is the recently delivered MSC Daniela (IMO: 9399014, Port of Registry: Panama). This container vessel is 366 meters long and 51 meters wide. Due to her design with the superstructure midships, she is capable of transporting about 14,000 TEU, more than Maersk's PS-class (amongst which is the Emma Maersk). One can argue about the looks of this vessel, however the design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded. The main engine of the container ship is MAN B&W 12K98MC-C with full output power of 72,240 kW. This power is enough for the ship to reach maximum speed of 25 knots. The MSC Daniela is operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company on their Far-East to Europe loop.

The MSC Daniela arrived this morning at the ECT Delta terminal, Rotterdam from Felixstowe and will depart tomorrow.

EUGEN MAERSK

The Eugen Maersk (IMO: 9321550, Port of Registry: Randers, Denmark) is, together with her sisters (amongst others) 'Emma Maersk', 'Estelle Maersk', 'Evelyn Maersk' and 'Ebba Maersk', the largest containership ever with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. A total capacity of 13,500 teu is also possible when containers are not fully loaded. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. Maersk calculates the teu capacity with loaded containers. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweigth of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimize the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series will also establish new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was delivered by Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd in 2008 as the seventh and last ship in Maersk's PS-class. The new MSC vessels, amongst which is the MSC Danit are smaller in dimensions, but can transport more TEU than the PS-class vessels of Maersk, due to her smart design (which doesn't give her the best looks).

The Eugen Maersk arrived this morning at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Algeciras. Tomorrow, the vessel will set sail for Bremerhaven. She will return within two months to Rotterdam.

COSCO GUANGZHOU

Today's Ship of the Day is the Cosco Guangzhou (IMO: 9305570, Port of Registry: Piraeus, Greece) which was one of the largest container vessels in gross tonnage about two years ago, together with her sisters: Cosco Hellas, Cosco Ningbo, Cosco Beijing and Cosco Yantian. Currently she is just one of the larger containervessels sailing. This post-panamax container vessel is 350 metres long, almost 43 metres wide, has a deadweight tonnage of 107,000 and a teu capacity of 9,500. She is currently sailing on the AE1-loop which connects Asia and Europe.

The Cosco Guangzhou will arrive later this evening at the Euromax Terminal, Rotterdam, with the last port of call at Singapore. She will leave the Port of Rotterdam within 48 hours, destination Felixstowe.

EMMA MAERSK

The Emma Maersk is the largest containership, measured in dimensions, with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group . The Emma Maersk arrived this morning at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Algeciras where she will stay for about 36 hours. The vessel will then set sail for Bremerhaven on the APM AE1 line. She will return within about two months to Rotterdam.

STELLANOVA

The Stellanova (IMO: 9085730, Port of Registry: Rotterdam) is a heavy load ship operated by Jumbo Shipping. She is, together with her sisters Jumbo Spirit and Fairload, the smallest vessel in Jumbo's fleet. The ship is almost 96 metres long, about 18 metres wide and has a gross tonnage of 4,962. She has one hold with a bale capacity of 7176 cubic metres, one crane with a capacity of 250 tons and 1 derrick with a 250 tons capacity (in combi 500 tons). The Stellanova was built in 1996 by the IJssel Vliet Combination, the Netherlands.

The Stellanova arrived this morning at the Waalhaven, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Gdynia, Poland.

KAZIMAH III

The Kazimah III (IMO: 9329693, Port of Registry: Safat, Kuwait) is a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) with a length of 333 metres, width of 60 metres, draught of 22 metres and a deadweight tonnage of 317,000. She was the first tanker of this type within the fleet renewal program of its owner Kuwait Oil Tanker Co. At present, KOTC operates about 25 vessels of which 8 VLCC's. The Kazimah III was built in 2006 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea.

Since the Egyptian government has widened and deepened the Suez Canal recently, the Kazimah III is now able to sail directly from Kuwait to Rotterdam without discharging her cargo and loading it again after passing the canal.

The Kazimah III is scheduled has entered the Port of Rotterdam last night for discharging crude oil at the MOT Terminal Rotterdam.

MORNING CALM

The Morning Calm (IMO: 9285615, Port of Registry: Nassau, Bahamas) is a pure care and truck carrier with a length over all of almost 200 metres, a width of 33 metres and a maximum draught of 10 metres. She was built in 2004 by Stocznia Gdynia S.A., Poland and is managed by Stamco Ship Management Company Ltd., Greece. The vessel is a floating car parking of 12 decks and has a capacity of about 6,600 cars on 54,500 sq metres.

The Morning Calm will arrive later today at the Rotterdam Car Terminal.

EURODAM

Today we have the in 2008 built Holland America Line cruise ship Eurodam (IMO: 9378448, Port of Registry: Rotterdam) featuring as the Ship of the Day. The ms Eurodam can accomodate up to 2,104 passenger on 11 passenger decks. She is featured with a topside Pan-Asian restaurant and lounge surrounded by panoramic views, an Explorer's Lounge Bar, an Italian restaurant adjacent to the Lido, elegant luxury jewelry boutique, atrium bar area, an enhanced show lounge and a photographic and imaging center. The Eurodam is 285 metres long, 36 metres wide and has a gross tonnage of 86,723. The ship is propelled and powered by four 12-cylinder V-type and two eight-cylinder in-line engines, manufactured by Germany’s Caterpillar Motoren GmbH & Co. These MaK brand engines are turbocharged, fuel-injected machines with Flexible Camshaft Technology that reduce visible smoke and nitrogen oxide emissions to levels below International Maritime Organization regulations. The engines are capable of producing 1,000 kilowatts of electricity per cylinder, with a total output of 64 megawatts.

The Eurodam is currently in port Rotterdam and will depart later this evening towards Copenhagen.

EVA N

Today's SotD is the Eva N (IMO: 9127150, Ex. Name: Berge Nord, Port of Registry: Monrovia, Liberia) . She is currently owned by Neu Seeschiffahrt, Germany. The Eva N has a deadweight tonnage of 218,000, a draught of almost 19 meters and has seven holds and hatches. The ship was built in 1997 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea. This 305 meters long, 53 meters wide bulk carrier is the biggest ship to enter the Arctic sea. Other vessels owned by Neu Seeschiffahrt and visiting Rotterdam regularly are: Faith N, Alfred N and Waterman N.

The Eva N will arrive this afternoon at the EECV bulk terminal, Rotterdam from Seven Islands, Canada carrying iron ore.

COSCO NAPOLI

The Cosco Napoli (IMO: 9305489, Port of Registry: Monrovia, Liberia) is an in 2006 built container ship with a length of 335 metres, a width of almost 43 metres and a maximum teu capacity of 8,200. She has a deadweight tonnage of 101,500 and a maximum draught of 14.5 metres. The vessel was built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and is currently operated by E.R. Schiffahrt, Hamburg, Germany. The Cosco Napoli's sisters are: Cosco China and Cosco Germany.

The Cosco Napoli is currently deployed on Cosco's AE-1 loop between South-Eastern Asia and Europe. She is scheduled to arrive this evening at the ECT Delta terminal, Rotterdam from Singapore and will depart tomorrow with destination Hamburg.

QUEEN VICTORIA

Today we have a cruise vessel of the Cunard Line entering the Port of Rotterdam, namely the two year old Queen Victoria (IMO: 9320556, Port of Registry: Southampton). The Queen Victoria is 294 metres long, 36 metres wide, 54 metres high and has a gross tonnage of 90,049. She provides accomodation to a maximum of 2,000 guests in 990 staterooms which are located on 12 decks. Nice to mention is that 86% of the rooms are outside and 71% of the rooms have balconies. Of course, she is equipped with several lounges, bars and restaurants. Next to this, she is also equipped with a shopping mall, a winter garden, a grand, stylish West-End-style theatre, a conference center, fitness center, sports deck etc., etc. She was built in 2007 by Fincantieri Shipyards, Italy.


The Queen Victoria has entered the port of Rotterdam this morning and will berth at the Holland Amerikakade.
