CMA CGM MAGELLAN

Today's Ship of the Day is the CMA CGM Magellan (IMO: 9454424, Port of Registry: London). The Magellan is currently the largest vessel in CMA CGM's fleet with a maximum teu capacity of 13,344. The vessel is 365 meters long and 51 meters wide. She was built in 2009 by Daewoo Heavy Industries, Korea. The vessel's design is comparable to the recently built MSC vessels (such as: MSC Beatrice) with the superstructure located midships. One can argue about the looks of this vessel, however the design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded. The Magellan will have seven sisterships, amongst which are the CMA CGM Amerigo Vespucci and CMA CGM Corte Real which have also been recently delivered. She is deployed in CMA CGM's FAL1 loop connecting China and North-Western Europe. The CMA CGM Magellan arrived this morning at the APM Terminal, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Hamburg on her second call in the loop. ORANGE STAR

Juice tanker Orange Star (IMO: 9564384, Port of Registry: Monrovia, Liberia) is the replacement vessel for the old Orange Star which was in service from 1975 to 2010 and visited the port of Rotterdam many times. The new vessel is 190 meters long and 32 meters wide, has a deadweight tonnage of 37,000 and a payload of 32,000 m3 with 12 juice tanks of 2000 m3 and 2 tanks of 4000 m3. The speed of 15 knots will be acquired with main engine type MAN B&W 6S50 MC-C7, made by Brodosplit Diesel Engines Factory Ltd. She was delivered in 2010 from Brodosplit Shipyard, Croatia for her owner Atlanship S.A., Switzerland.

The Orange Star arrived last night at the Waalhaven, Rotterdam awaiting a berth at the Continental Juice terminal.

HUGO N

Ore carrier Hugo N (IMO: 9398096, Port of Registry: Monrovia, Liberia) is 327 meters long, 55 meters wide and has a maximum draught of 21.4 meters. She has a deadweight tonnage of 297,000. She was delivered in January 2011 at Universal Shipbuilding, Japan and operated by Neu Seeschiffahrt. Her sister vessels are Abigail N, Daniel N, Helen N and Steven N The Hugo N is expected to arrive later tonight at the EECV terminal, Rotterdam with a load of iron ore from Saldanha Bay. ESTELLE MAERSK

The Estelle Maersk (IMO: 9321495, Port of Registry: Hellerup, Denmark) is, together with its sisters (amongst which are the 'Emma Maersk' and 'Eleonora Maersk'), the largest containership ever with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. A total capacity of 13,500 teu is also possible when containers are not fully loaded. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. Maersk calculates the teu capacity with loaded containers. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweigth of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimise the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series will also establish new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was built by Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd in 2006.The new MSC vessels, amongst which is the MSC Danit are smaller in dimensions, but can transport more TEU than the PS-class vessels of Maersk, due to their smart design (which doesn't give the vessels the best looks).
The Estelle Maersk is scheduled to arrive later this afternoon at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia. Within 36 hours, the vessel will set sail for Bremerhaven on the APM AE-10 loop. She will return within about 7 weeks to Rotterdam.

COSCO ASIA

Today we have the containership Cosco Asia (IMO: 9345403, Port of Registry: Panama) featuring as the Ship of the Day. The Cosco Asia is a 349 metres long, 45 metres wide ship with a maximum teu capacity of 10,000 and a deadweight tonnage of 110,000. She was christened on July 26, 2007 in South Korea and made her maiden voyage on August 9, 2007 from China to Europe. The vessel was the first of six identical ships being built for COSCO by Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard. Her sister vessels are: Cosco Europe, Cosco Africa, Cosco America, Cosco Oceania and Cosco Pacific. The vessel realized a high-level of automation and is very environmentally friendly. It was classed by Lloyd's Register to stringent environmental standards, reflecting COSCO's commitment to its UN Global Compact responsibilities.

The Cosco Asia arrived last night at the Euromax terminal, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Hamburg.

CSCL LONG BEACH

Today we have containership CSCL Long Beach (IMO: 9314258, Port of Registry: Hong Kong) featuring as the Ship of the Day. This ship is a 336 metres long, 46 metres wide containervessel with a deadweight tonnage of 111,700. The vessel has a teu capacity of 9,580 and 700 reefers and is propelled by a 93,120 BHP MAN B&W engine, which gives the vessel a maximum speed of 24.7 kts. The CSCL Long Beach was built in 2007 by Samsung Heavy Industries, Korea. She is operated by Seaspan ship management, Hong Kong.

The CSCL Long Beach is expected to arrive later tonight at the ECT Delta terminal from Hamburg.

MAERSK EDINBURGH

The Maersk Edinburgh (IMO: 9456757, Port of Registry: Majuro, Marshall Islands) is Maersk's answer to the new breed of containervessels, introduced by MSC, with the superstructure midships. The Maersk Edinburgh was one of the first of nine newbuildings in this class, amongst which are the Maersk Edison, Maersk Edmonton and Maersk Eindhoven. The vessel is 366 meters long and 48 meters wide and has a deadweight of 141,000 tonnes. Containers are carried 17-wide below deck and 19-wide on the hatch-covers. The maximum capacity of each ship is 7,074 TEU on deck and 6,018 TEU below deck, making 13,092 TEU in total. The vessels are deployed in Maersk's AE-8 loop. The vessels are crucial in Maersk's strategy to maintain and expand market share. Rumours are that Maersk is also considering 18,000 teu vessels to be built in the following years. The Maersk Edinburgh arrived this morning at the APM Terminal, Rotterdam from Le Havre. She will return to Rotterdam next week on her second call to Rotterdam in the loop.

CMA CGM ALASKA & PANTONIO (COLLISION)

Last night outward bound containership Pantonio (IMO: 9440576, Port of Registry: Limassol) suffered a blackout and collided with, also outward bound, containership CMA CGM Alaska at the Maas entrance area. Vessels have both returned with tugboat assistance to Rotterdam to assess the damage. The CMA CGM Alaska is reported to have suffered a breach in her hull above the waterline. The Pantonio has a damaged bow. The CMA CGM Alaska is 366 meters long and 48 meters wide and has a maximum TEU capacity of 12,562. The Pantonio is 129 meters long and 21 meters wide with a teu capacity of 690. Both vessels are currently located at the Calandkanaal.

SAFWA

Crude oil tanker Safwa (IMO: 9223887, Port of Registry: Nassau, Bahama's) was built in 2002 at Samsung Heavy Industries and is owned by the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia. The vessel is 333 meters long, 58 meters wide and has a maximum draught of 22.5 meters and has a cargo capacity of 312159 tonnes. She is propelled by a 33301 kW 8RTA84T-D Sulzer engine. The Safwa is expected to arrive later tonight at Vopak Terminal. The vessel already discharged her cargo of crude oil last week and will now be loaded with fuel oil. ONDINA

The Ondina (IMO: 9248485, Port of Registry: Douglas, Isle of Man) is a 329 meters long, 60 meters wide crude oil tanker, with a maximum draught of over 21 meters. This double-hull VLCC has a deadweight tonnage of almost 300,000 and has a cargo oil capacity of 331,335 CuM. She was built at Universal Shipbuilding Corporation (former Hitachi Zosen), Japan and delivered in 2002 as the Front Stratus. The vessel is propelled by a MAN B&W 7S80MC 25,090 kW engine and is operated by Stasco Ship Management for Shell International Trading and Shipping Company.

The Ondina is scheduled to arrive later tonight at the MOT Terminal, Maasvlakte, Rotterdam.

AIDABLU

Cruise ship AIDABlu (IMO: 9398888, Port of Registry: Genoa, Italy) is a Sphinx class cruise ship, operated by the German cruise line, AIDA Cruises. The vessel was built at Meyer Werft, Germany and delivered in February 2010. She provides accomodation to 2,050 passengers in 1096 cabins (374 are on the inside and 722 on the outside) and offers six restaurants, a wellness area and a theatre. The AIDABlu arrived last night at Rotterdam from Antwerp and will leave tomorrow morning with destination Hamburg.
