EBBA MAERSK

Ebba Maersk
The Ebba Maersk (IMO: 9321524, Port of Registry: Copenhagen, Denmark) is the fifth in line of Maersk's PS-class. Together with her sisters (amongst which are the 'Emma Maersk' and 'Evelyn Maersk') she was the largest containership ever in dimensions with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. A total capacity of 13,500 teu is also possible when containers are not fully loaded. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. Maersk calculates the teu capacity with loaded containers. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweight of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimise the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series have also established new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was launched at Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd in May 2007. The new design in containerships with the superstructure midships, amongst which is the MSC Danit are smaller in dimensions, but can transport more TEU than the PS-class vessels of Maersk, due to their smart design (which doesn't give the vessels the best looks).

The Ebba Maersk will arrive this evening at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Suez Canal Zone terminal. Tomorrow, the vessel will set sail for Bremerhaven on the APM AE10 line. She will return within about 2 weeks to Rotterdam on her return call this loop.

SC BALTIC

SC Baltic
The SC Baltic (IMO: 7393793, Port of Registry: Nørresundby, Denmark) is an in 1975 built pallet handling vessel with an overall length of 95 metres, a width of 15 metres and a maximum draught of 5.7 metres. The vessel can handle pallets using the two starboard sidedoors together with the four pallet elevators and six on board forklifts. She is also capable of transporting special, project cargo at her open deck. She has a total bale capacity of 6.544 m3 and is propelled by a 2,200 kW MAK engine, which gives the vessel a service speed of 12 knots.

NYK OCEANUS

NYK Oceanus
The NYK Oceanus (IMO: 9312975, Port of Registry: Panama) was built in 2007 at IHI corporation shipyard, Japan and is currently owned and operated by NYK Line. The vessel is 336 metres long, 46 metres wide and has a maximum TEU capacity of 9,120 of which 600 reefer containers. These dimensions give the vessel a gross tonnage of 98,799. She is propelled by a Sulzer 12RT-flex96C engine which delivers a power output of 68,200 kW. She has a maximum speed of 24.5 knots. Although not as large as the NYK vessels Vesta, Vega, Venus and Virgo, the NYK Oceanus is still one of the larger containervessels currently sailing.


The NYK Oceanus arrived this morning from Suez on NYK's Loop 1. She will leave within 48 hours with destination Hamburg and will return to Rotterdam in about two months.

CMA CGM MAGELLAN

Today's Ship of the Day is the CMA CGM Magellan (IMO: 9454424, Port of Registry: London). The Magellan is currently the largest vessel in CMA CGM's fleet with a maximum teu capacity of 13,344. The vessel is 365 meters long and 51 meters wide. She was built in 2009 by Daewoo Heavy Industries, Korea. The vessel's design is comparable to the recently built MSC vessels (such as: MSC Beatrice) with the superstructure located midships. One can argue about the looks of this vessel, however the design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded. The Magellan will have seven sisterships, amongst which are the CMA CGM Amerigo Vespucci and CMA CGM Corte Real which have also been recently delivered. She is deployed in CMA CGM's FAL1 loop connecting China and North-Western Europe.

The CMA CGM Magellan arrived this morning at the ECT Delta Terminal, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Zeebrugge.

CMA CGM THALASSA

CMA CGM ThalassaThe CMA-CGM Thalassa (IMO: 9356294, Port of Registry: Limassol, Cyprus) is a 346 meters long, 43 meters wide containership built at the end of 2008 and delivered to the ship-operator on 30th December 2008 by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Ltd, South Korea. She is still one of the largest ships in this sector of maritime transport with her deadweight of over 130,000 tons and a teu capacity of 10,960. The vessel is propelled by a Man B&W 12K98ME-C engine delivering 72,264 kW, which is enough for the vessel to reach maximum speed of 24.7 knots.

The Thalassa is scheduled to arrive this afternoon at the ECT Delta Terminal from Zeebrugge and will have an expected portstay of about 24 hours.

CSCL ZEEBRUGGE

Today we have containership CSCL Zeebrugge (IMO: 9314234, Port of Registry: Hong Kong) featuring as the Ship of the Day. This ship is a 336 metres long, 46 metres wide containervessel with a deadweight tonnage of 108,000. The vessel has a teu capacity of 9,580 and 700 reefers and is propelled by a 93,120 BHP MAN B&W engine, which gives the vessel a maximum speed of 24.7 kts. The CSCL Zeebrugge was built in 2007 by Samsung Heavy Industries, Korea. She is operated by Seaspan ship management, Hong Kong.

The CSCL Long Beach is expected to arrive this afternoon at the ECT Delta terminal from Felixstowe.

OOSTERSCHELDE

The three-masted topsail schooner 'Oosterschelde' (IMO: 5347221, Port of Registry: Rotterdam) is the last remaining representative of the large fleet of schooners that sailed under the Dutch flag at the beginning of the 20th century. As the largest restored Dutch sailing ship the 'Oosterschelde' is a monument for Dutch shipbuilding and maritime navigation under sail. The vessel was built in the Netherlands in 1918 at the order of the Rotterdam shipping company H.A.A.S. As a freighter the ship could carry some hundred tons of cargo. The vessel was restored between 1990 and 1992 and since then it has made a voyage around the world and several other long voyages. Next to these voyages the vessel is also available for chartering.

The vessel is 50 metres long, 7.5 meters wide and has a mast heigth from the keel of 36 metres. She has a sail area of 891 square metres and is also equipped with a 6 cylinder Deutz, 360 pk engine.

The Oosterschelde has a maximum capacity of 120 passengers for daytrips (at sea: 36) and 24 on longer voyages. The accomodation exists of 8 two-person cabins and 2 four-person cabins. One board are 5 toilets and two showers.

The Oosterschelde arrived this afternoon at the Veerhaven, Rotterdam to visit the Wereldhavendagen.

HR.MS. DE RUYTER (F804)

The Hr. Ms. De Ruyter is an air defense and command frigate of the Dutch Royal navy. It is one of the four Dutch frigates of the 'Zeven Provinciën'-class and is therefor a sistership of the 'Hr. Ms. De Zeven Provinciën' and the 'Hr. Ms. Tromp'.

The Hr. Ms. De Ruyter has a crew of 174 persons and is already the 13th ship to bear the name 'De Ruyter'. Of course the ship was named after the well-known hero at sea Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter, who was born on March 24, 1607 in Flushing and died on April 29, 1676 on board of his flagship 'Eendracht'.

The frigate was built by 'De Schelde' in Flushing between 2000 en 2002. It is 144 meters long, 17 meters wide, can reach a speed of 30 knots, is incorporated with stealth techniques and is armed with a Oto Breda-cannon 127 mm, Vertical Launch System (VLS) Mk 41 for Enhanced Sea Sparrow Missiles en Standard Missiles, Harpoon Missile, Goalkeeper (fast fire cannon), Mk. 46 Torpedo-weapons and a Lynx orNH-90 helikopter.

The ship entered the port of Rotterdam this morning and is currently berthed at the Parkkade to visit the upcoming Wereldhavendagen-weekend.

The Christophe Colomb is currently the largest vessel in CMA CGM's fleet with a maximum teu capacity of 13,344. The vessel is 365 meters long and 51 meters wide.
