ONDINA

The Ondina (IMO: 9248485, Port of Registry: Douglas, Isle of Man) is a 329 meters long, 60 meters wide crude oil tanker, with a maximum draught of over 21 meters. This double-hull VLCC has a deadweight tonnage of almost 300,000 and has a cargo oil capacity of 331,335 CuM. She was built at Universal Shipbuilding Corporation (former Hitachi Zosen), Japan and delivered in 2002 as the Front Stratus. The vessel is propelled by a MAN B&W 7S80MC 25,090 kW engine and is operated by Stasco Ship Management for Shell International Trading and Shipping Company.

The Ondina arrived this morning at the Team Terminal, Rotterdam.

CMA CGM TOSCA

Today's SotD is the CMA CGM Tosca (Port of Registry: Marseille, France, IMO: 9299783). The ship is capable of transporting about 8,500 teu and has a capacity for 700 reefers. She is 334 meters long, 43 meters wide and has a deadweight tonnage of 101,800. The vessel was built in 2005 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea and is managed and operated by CMA CGM, France. She is propelled by a 68,640 kW 12 cylinder MAN-B&W engine which gives the vessel a maximum speed of 23 knots. The Tosca's sisters are, amongst others, CMA CGM Parsifal, CMA CGM Don Carlos, CMA CGM Nabucco and CMA CGM La Traviata, all named after famous opera's. The CMA CGM Tosca is scheduled to arrive later this evening at the ECT Delta terminal, Rotterdam. She is scheduled to depart the port of Rotterdam tomorrow. The ship is sailing on the French Asia Line (FAL) between the Far East and North-Western Europe.

CHRISTIAN RADICH

The Christian Radich (IMO: 5071729, Port of Registry: Oslo, Norway) is a sailing vessel of the type Windjammer. She was built in 1937 by Framnæs Mekaniske Verksted, Norway. This tall ship is 73 metres long overall, 9.7 metres wide and 37.7 metres high, provides accomodation for 88 passengers and has a sail area of 1360 sq.m., which consists of a total of 27 sails. This gives the vessel a maximum speed of 14 kts. From 1999 and on, the ship has been on the charter market as well as sailing with paying trainees to foreign ports on summer trips, participating in the Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race and large sail events in various European ports. She is well known through the international release in 1958 of the Cinemiracle widescreen movie Windjammer.

The Christian Radich is scheduled to enter the port of Rotterdam this afternoon. She will berth at the Parkkade, Rotterdam.

COSCO GUANGZHOU

Today's Ship of the Day is the Cosco Guangzhou (IMO: 9305570, Port of Registry: Piraeus, Greece) which was one of the largest container vessels in gross tonnage about two years ago, together with her sisters: Cosco Hellas, Cosco Ningbo, Cosco Beijing and Cosco Yantian. Currently she is just one of the larger containervessels sailing. This post-panamax container vessel is 350 metres long, almost 43 metres wide, has a deadweight tonnage of 107,000 and a teu capacity of 9,500. She is currently sailing on the AE1-loop which connects Asia and Europe.

The Cosco Guangzhou is scheduled to arrive later this afternoon at the ECT Delta Terminal, Rotterdam, with the last port of call at Antwerp. She will leave the Port of Rotterdam within 36 hours.

CMA CGM MEDEA

The CMA CGM Medea (IMO: 9299800, Port of Registry: Marseille) is an in 2006, by Hyundai Heavy Industries built, Post-Panamax container vessel, capable of transporting up to 9,400 teu. She is 349 metres long, almost 43 metres wide, has a maximum draught of about 15 metres and a deadweight tonnage of 107,000. The CMA CGM Medea also provides passenger accomodation with five passenger cabins. On board, guests can book a single or double room and enjoy the ship’s amenities including a lounge, gymnasium, pool and library along with meals at the captain’s table. Travelers seeking an uncommon cruise adventure between Asia and Europe need look no further. The CMA CGM Medea is the fourth of eight super mega container vessels deployed in the new European (FAL2) service jointly operated by CMA CGM and China Shipping. Her sisters are: CMA CGM Fidelio, Rigoletto and Norma.

The CMA CGM Medea is scheduled to enter the Port of Rotterdam later this evening. She will berth at the ECT Delta Terminal and depart within 36 hours with destination Hamburg.

COMBI DOCK I

Today we have the heavy lift cargo ship Combi Dock I (IMO: 9400473, Port of Registry: St. John's, Antigua & Barbuda) featuring as the Ship of the Day. The Combi Dock I is 162 meters long, 25 meters wide and was delivered in January 2008. The vessel is able to transport heavy lift
offshore objects loading/discharging the cargo by floating the objects with a maximum draft of 4.5 mtrs onto and off the large free cargo deck, having a size of 132,60 m x 25,40 meters,. She is equipped with 3 heavy lift cranes, 2 with a capacity of a SWL 350 t each and 1 with a SWL of 200 t, delivering a total lifting capacity with 2 in tandem 700 t. The Ship was built at Lloyd Werft, Bremerhaven and is currently operated by Combilift, Denmark.

The Combi Dock I is scheduled to arrive later tonight at the Waalhaven, Rotterdam.

BELGIAN REEFER

The Belgian Reefer (IMO: 8300365, Port of Registry: Nassau, Bahama's) is a temperature controlled vessel (reefer) managed by Chartworld Shipping Corporation, Greece and operated by NYKCool AB, Sweden in her Jumbo Class. The vessel is almost 145 metres long, 24 metres wide, has a gross tonnage of 12,383 and a cargo capacity of 7,830 square metres. She is equipped with four 10 ton cranes and propelled by a 6-cylinder Sulzer engine which gives the vessel an operating speed of 18 knots. The Belgian Reefer is expected to arrive later tonight at the Fruit Terminal, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Sheerness.

XIN LOS ANGELES

A few years ago the Xin Los Angeles was the largest containervessel around. But since the launching of the Emma Maersk (which also arrived at the port of Rotterdam today), the vessel is 'just' one of the bigger ones. The Xin Los Angeles is 337 metres long, almost 46 metres wide and has a maximum draught of 15 metres. She can carry a maximum of 18 rows of containers by eight tiers on the weather deck and 16 rows by 10 tiers in the holds which gives the vessel a total capacity of 9,600 teu. The ship is propelled by a MAN B&W 12K98MC-C Mk6 engine, with a power of 68,520 kW. During sea trials the ship achieved a ballast service speed of 25.4 knots. The CSCL Pusan and Xin Shanghai are her sistervessels.

The Xin Los Angeles has entered the port of Rotterdam this morning and is currently berthed at the ECT terminal where she will stay for about 30 hours.

EUGEN MAERSK

The Eugen Maersk (IMO: 9321550, Port of Registry: Randers, Denmark) is, together with her sisters (amongst others) 'Emma Maersk', 'Estelle Maersk', 'Evelyn Maersk' and 'Ebba Maersk', the largest containership ever with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. A total capacity of 13,500 teu is also possible when containers are not fully loaded. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. Maersk calculates the teu capacity with loaded containers. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweigth of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimize the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series will also establish new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was delivered by Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd in 2008 as the seventh and last ship in Maersk's PS-class.

The Eugen Maersk arrived this morning at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Algeciras. Tomorrow, the vessel will set sail for Bremerhaven. She will return within two months to Rotterdam.

TRIUMPH

The Triumph (IMO: 8902967, Port of Registry: Willemstad, Dutch Antilles) is a semi-submersible heavy lift vessel, delivered on December 16, 2008. The Triumph is one of six single-hull tankers converted into heavy lift vessels at the Cosco Guangdong Shipyard. The vessel, former name Marble, has an unobstructed deck area measuring 44.5 m x 130 m, and is designed for carrying semi-submersible and jack-up drilling units, as well as offshore structures. She is 217 meters long and 45 meters wide and has an overall deck space of 5,785 sqm. The ship is operated by Dockwise, The Netherlands and managed by Anglo-Eastern Ship management.

The Triumph will enter the port of Rotterdam this afternoon, carrying the drilling platform Maersk Resolve. She will berth in the Calandkanaal, Rotterdam.

CMA CGM NORMA

The CMA CGM Norma (IMO: 9299812, Port of Registry: Marseille) is an in 2006, by Hyundai Heavy Industries built, Post-Panamax container vessel, capable of transporting 9415 teu. She is 350 metres long, almost 43 metres wide, has a maximum draught of about 14.5 metres and a deadweight tonnage of 107,200. The CMA CGM Norma was the first of eight super mega container vessels deployed in the new European (FAL2) service jointly operated by CMA CGM and China Shipping. Her sisters are the CMA CGM Rigoletto, CMA CGM Medea and CMA CGM Fidelio.

The CMA CGM Norma arrived this morning at the ECT Delta Terminal, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Zeebrugge, Belgium. She is scheduled to depart within 36 hours with destination Hamburg.

TOISA PEGASUS

Today we have the offshore support vessel Toisa Pegasus (IMO: 9392509, Port of Registry: London) featuring as the Ship of the Day. The Toisa Pegasus was built in 2008 at Merwede Shipyard, The Netherlands and is especially designed for diving operations as well as subsea construction, installation and maintenance on the North Sea and world wide. With a fully integrated saturation diving system, which has a capacity for 18 divers, and a 400 tonne offshore crane, this vessel can support a wide variety of subsea operations worldwide. The Toisa Pegasus is 131.7 metres long, 22 metres wide and has a maximum speed of 13 knots at the design draught of 6.25 metres. She is propelled by a 2970 kW engine and is equipped with two azimuth aft thrusters of 3000 kW each, two forward tunnel thrusters of 1335 kW each and one forward retractable azimuth thruster of 1200 kW. The Toisa Pegasus has entered the port of Rotterdam this morning and is currently located at the Waalhaven.

THEODORA

The Theodora (IMO: 9005338, Port of Registry: Rotterdam) is a bitumen tanker, operated by Theodora Shipping, The Netherlands which operates the most modern and sophisticated fleet of high-heat tankers with cargo capacities ranging from 3.600 to 8.000 tdw and services customers throughout Europe, Mediterranean, Black Sea, West Africa and the Caribbean. The vessel is 110 meters long, 17 meters wide. The ship's Wärtsila 8R 32E, 3,000 kW engine deliver a service speed of approximately 14 knots. The Theodora was built in 1991 at Merwede Shipyard, The Netherlands. She is equipped with 6 wing tanks and 3 centre tanks with a total capacity of 5,156 m3, which can be heated up to a maximum cargo temperature of 250 ^o and three Bornemann screw cargo pumps with a capacity of 375 m3/h.

The Theodora will arrive later this evening at EBS Laurenshaven terminal, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Le Havre.

SALVAGE CHAMPION

The 500th post on the Ship of the Day weblog is the tug and salvage vessel Salvage Champion (IMO: 7530444, Port of Registry: Kingstown, Saint Vincent and The Grenadines). The Salvage Champion was built in 1976 as the Nippon Maru by Miyoshi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Japan. The tug is currently owned by Asian Marine co., ltd, Taiwan. She is 72.4 meters long, 13 meters wide and she is powered by 2 Hanshin 6 LU54 engines delivering a total output of 10,000 BHP, which ensures a bollard pull of 132 tons. The vessel can achieve a speed of 13.5 knots and has a cruising range of about 65 days.

The Salvage Champion is expected to arrive later afternoon at the Waalhaven, Rotterdam towing the pontoon Sainty No. 8, loaded with hulls for barges. After delivering this load, she will berth at the Parkkade, Rotterdam.

STELLANOVA

The Stellanova (IMO: 9085730, Port of Registry: Rotterdam) is a heavy load ship operated by Jumbo Shipping. She is, together with her sisters Jumbo Spirit and Fairload, the smallest vessel in Jumbo's fleet. The ship is almost 96 metres long, about 18 metres wide and has a gross tonnage of 4,962. She has one hold with a bale capacity of 7176 cubic metres, one crane with a capacity of 250 tons and 1 derrick with a 250 tons capacity (in combi 500 tons). The Stellanova was built in 1996 by the IJssel Vliet Combination, the Netherlands.

The Stellanova arrive this morning at the Waalhaven, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Gdynia, Poland.

TIDEWAY ROLLINGSTONE

The Tideway Rollingstone (IMO: 7814101, Port of Registry: Flushing, The Netherlands) is a stone dumping vessel, built in 1979 as the semi-submersible heavy transport vessel “Super Servant 1” at the Oshima yard in
Japan for the former owner Wijsmuller Tansport. She was converted into her current form in 1992 at IJsselwerf, Capelle a/d IJssel, The Netherlands. The Tideway Rollingstone is 139 meters long, 32 meters wide and has an operational speed of 12 to 14 knots. She can operate in water depths up to 300 meters. The ship has two large stone storage areas with a total storage capacity of 13,000 tons. Between these two storages a pipe storage and assembly tower was placed, which suspends the
fall pipe through which the stones are dumped. The vessel has a stone dumping capacity of 700 tons per hour.

The Tideway Rollingstone is expected to arrive later this afternoon at Damen shipyard, Schiedam.
